In the vegetable garden, it would seem that planting fruit trees is a good idea, as well as small red fruit bushes such as blackcurrant, red currant or raspberry. You can also plant some aromatic herbs such as sage or thyme, rhubarb and vines.

Then you have to select the right place with the right soil and sunlight for the tree or shrub. Planting a tree which needs a well drained soil, in a wet substrate, even on Saint Catherine’s Day, will not be very successful.

Beyond the vegetable garden there are some trees for which it is the right time to take cuttings, such as willows, oaks or poplars.

Last year, a friend gave me some fruit that had been given to him by a third party who has a shrub in her neighbourhood that I understand is rather rare in our region.

I knew neither the fruit nor the shrub in question.

But after some research with the details I had been given, I found the poncirus trifoliata, also called the hardy orange. The shrub is rather decorative like the Japanese quince, but like the latter, it is possible to use its fruit to make jam.

https://www.gardenia.net/plant/poncirus-trifoliata-hardy-orange

The poncirus is a citrus fruit, hence its more common name of hardy orange. The fruit has the colour of a lemon, but is shaped and sized like a small clementine and tastes a bit like a grapefruit. The shrub, is covered in thorns.

My husband and I are big fans of citrus marmalade so it seemed logical to try this type of jam with my poncirus fruits. No sooner said than done and I was able to taste this marmalade which I found very pleasant, I would even say that I became a fan. A little detail about the poncirus fruit: it’s full of seeds. I kept a lot of them to sow to see if I could grow the shrubs.

Well, all my seeds grew and I ended up with lots of plants. I transplanted some in late spring into pots to grow them, but they didn’t like the summer and almost all died.

Since it’s the season, I’m going to try to plant some of the remaining plants directly into the ground to see if they will survive the winter. It seems that poncirus is the only citrus fruit that can withstand frost down to -15° C, so my plants should hold up as long as we don’t have a very hard winter. Nowadays with climate change, Sologne’s winters have become milder and it is very rare that the temperature drops below -10° C and it never lasts long. The ground rarely freezes, so my little plants should survive. They may have as much chance to do so in the ground as in their already too small planter.

I will plant the rest of them in the spring, in March as indicated on the websites which talk about this shrub.

ENGLISH “On St Catherine’s Day, all wood takes root” (French saying) Although St Catherine’s Day has already passed; it was on 25th November; this day is only the starting point for winter planting of bare root trees and shrubs (plants that have grown in the ground to make them more vigorous).
