From what I’ve read, they are bigger, but they don’t keep as long as those planted later.

While waiting to work outdoors, you can always start sowing in trays or pots as early as February, so that you are ready to plant as soon as frost is no longer a threat. But be careful not to start too early either, as the young plants may become a little too cramped in their pots…

Let’s get back to the outdoor garden. I always plant my first potatoes around 19th March, the date of St Joseph’s Day in France (an old custom), so that I can enjoy them in June. Of course, the risk of frost as soon as some of their young leaves come out of the ground is always very real. I have sometimes grown these potatoes under a plastic tunnel, but in recent years I have decided not to cover them any more. I just push some soil back around them after the first leaves have appeared. And it’s all right if there is a light frost, but I mustn’t forget.

I have to keep an eye on the weather forecast every day so I don’t get caught out by a frost.

This year I forgot and some potatoes froze a bit on Thursday 27th April.

Is that a problem?

Yes and no. The potatoes that suffered from the frost will grow leaves again, but they will lose time and they should be less productive. But now, if I’m more careful, they should start to grow again and finally produce their tubers at the same time as those planted later…

But I should keep an eye on them at least until about the 15th of May.

From 23rd April to 13th May, all gardeners know to watch out for the Ice Saints. If it is clear in the evening, there may still be some frost at night at this time of year. This generally applies to anyone who is not by the sea or in the south of the country in France.

Whether traditional or not, the Ice Saints mark some days during a period of the year, from late April to early May, when there is a definite risk of frost. The atmosphere is often still cool, the ground is not yet warm enough and if the sky is clear in the evening, it is still possible to have a frost peak during the night.

I will certainly never plant any tomatoes or peppers outside before mid May.
